Gen X - Dancing With Myself 7"

The first single released under the shortened name of 'Gen X' was 'Dancing With Myself' a little more commercial sounding than their earlier material but still has some cracking 'Tony James' guitar riff's.

I mainly posted this for the still OOP b-side 'Ugly Rash', which was also recorded as a dub version unsurprisingly called 'Ugly Dub' (which was on the b-side of the 12" of this single, of which I can't seem to find). 'Ugly Rash' isn't the greatest of songs but it's worth a listen.

Dancing with myself got to number #62 n the UK charts and was later re-released in 1982 as a four track EP (I will post this later on) and managed to climb two places higher to number #60. It was also was later re-recorded by Billy Idol as a solo artist for his first single in 1981 but failed to chart in the UK but did get to #102 in the US, and as you all know this didn't stop him from going on to much bigger things.

So give it a try and see what you think.

Band: Gen X
Label: Chrysalis
Year: 1980
Tracks:
1. Dancing With Myself
2. Ugly Rash

Ripped from glorious scratched (the b-side very scratched) vinyl

If you like this then your in luck as you can still download their third album 'Kiss Me Deadly' which I still really rate (I have a cassette version which has a slightly different track list - check out the comment on Amazon and you will see what I mean). As mentioned above Ugly Rash is not on this collection.

Cheers Gary. I never brought this one at the time despite liking it.

I was never that taken with them at the time, but 30-odd years later, this sounds great! Just goes to show you can't keep a good tune down…

Great single. Bought the twelve inch as soon as it came out and still have it. For me as a long time fan it signalled a rebirth. Sadly that rebirth was to be very short lived. Loved the Kiss Me Deadly album as well. Some great tracks on there. The guitar riff that runs through the song is played by Steve New (Not TJ). Steve Jones also played rhythm on the single version of the song. Great stuff!

Thanks Longy and Barney. Your not wrong their Barney I felt the same when I dug it out, havent played it for ages but it had me singing along.

Cheers Kes thanks for the extra info and correcting my mistake. I also bought the 12" but can't seem to find it, I have a horrible feeling I flogged when I was a little short of cash.

There was also a twelve inch ep that came out called Gen X-4
that included a beefed up version of Untouchables and a killer version of Rock On. Again, both with Steve Jones on guitar.

Kes you read my mind. I ripped this should be up on wed or thursday. Rock On is one of my fave gen X tracks. Trumps the Gary Glitter version 10x over.

Yep, agree Gary. Their version of Rock On is better than the original. It was an old Generation X number (Cover version) played in their earlier days. I think they also did a version on an early ‘77 Peel session. Look foreword to hearing it!

Cheers

Soooooo excited that you are going to up Rock On! I've been chasing it for years. As far as I can tell it never appeared on any CD - unless you believe some web sites that claim a rarities album called 'The Idol Generation' exists. I've never seen it on eBay. Thanks for an awesome site!
