Terry and Gerry - Live At The ICA Oct. 1984 Part 1

This is part one of four posts, all of them live gigs from the ICA in October 1984. I think there was whole week of gigs and these were my favorites. Part two will be 'The Very Things', Part three 'yeah Yeah Noh' and the final part 'Marc Riley and the Creepers'.

So first up the great alternative skiffle band 'Terry and Gerry', I still think these guys were one of the best live bands ever. Their recordings whilst good, never captured that feeling when you saw them live. Gerry was the master of banter and the band managed to get audience involvement on just about every song (which I have never seen again). This was clearly something that developed over the years as this earlier recording does not have so much audience participation as I remember.

Band: Terry and Gerry
Year: 1984
Tracks:
1. The Good, The Bad and The Usherette
2. Wolfman's Request
3. A Thousand Towns
4. Cars
5. Hello
6. Butters On The Bread
7. T.V. Songs
8. Dennis and Brian
9. Wait Until Your Older
10. Pizza, Pies and Junk
11. Clothes Shop
12. Outro

Ripped from FM radio and then ripped from glorious hissing tape (see comments)

If you like Terry and Gerry you won't be disappointed with this brilliant album, buy it here:

The Very Things - Live At The ICA Oct. 1984 Part 2

Formed from the ashes of the brilliant 'Cravats', came the even better and very much stranger 'The Very Things'. The singers strange vocals, warped fairground type music and odd lyrics make them incomparable (anyone know of anyone else that sounds like them? then leave a comment).

All of these tracks are great but my favourite is 'The Bushes Scream, While My Daddy Prunes'
The reason there is two parts is down to my poor ripping, I thought the song had finished.

It's a Drug, It's a Drug

Marc Riley & The Creepers - Live At The ICA Oct. 1984 Part 4

Last up is the excellent Marc Riley and the Creepers. Riley who was also an ex member of 'The Fall' is most probably better known now for his alter ego 'Lard' who worked alongside ex radio 1 DJ Mark Radcliffe. They both use to host my second favourite radio show (John Peel obviously first) 'Out On Blue Six'.

I always liked Marc Riley and the Creepers and these four live tracks are an excellent sample of their music. My personal favourite is 'Blood From A Stone' which was renamed on the 1985 'Shadow Figure EP' to 'Snipe'.

Band: Marc Riley and the Creepers
Year: 1984
Tracks:
1. Blood From A Stone
2. Location Bangladesh
3. Down In The Bunker
4. Crazy Shirt Scene

Ripped from FM radio and then ripped from glorious hissing tape

If you like this there doesn't appear to be anything commercially available. So you can get most of their singles at the excellent Phoenix Hairpins here and their classic album Rock'n'roll Liquorice Flavour from the equally excellent Rollmops here.

The Cramps - Live In Exeter 1980

Hi everyone back from holiday and thought I would start of with some classic "Cramps". Not sure where I got this one, it came from a cheap old tape that I clearly made (it's got my crap handwriting on it) and I have no memory of ever making it. I don't have a specific location and time for this bootleg, but from the dialogue between songs Lux starts an unfinished limerick "there was a young girl from Exeter" so I guess that's where I got the location from, and the year came from the statement just before the classic Goo Goo Muck "be on our new album Songs Your Mother Taught Me" which was released in 1980 (for those of you that spotted the mistake, check out Fred's comment first), which is a little strange as the track was originally released on their classic second album "Psychedelic Jungle" in 1981. So does anyone know anymore? If so leave a comment.

The quality is classic homemade bootleg, but is definitely listenable and some of the dialogue with Lux and Ivy and the audience is worth listening to, just to bring back the memories of how good this band were.

Band: The Cramps
Year: 1980
Label: It's a bootleg
Tracks:
1. Human Fly
2. Garbage Man
3. I Was A Teenage Werewolf
4. Sunglasses After Dark
5, Strychnine

9. Teenage Caveman
10. Goo Goo Muck
11. Zombie Dance
12. The Natives Are Restless
13. Surfin Bed

Ripped from a glorious hissing tape

If you like this and you haven't got these, there must be something wrong with you, Their second album is my personal favourite:
Psychedelic Jungle
their classic debut:
Songs the Lord Taught Us
and if you like just the singles you won't go far wrong with this:
Off the Bone

Ruts DC - Live 1981: Edingburgh Nite Club

Another classic from Philippe, this time a live bootleg from "Ruts DC", with 9 tracks coming from their debut album "Animal Down" some original "Ruts" songs, unfortunately a couple of them have been clipped in the recording but apart from that a pretty good recording.

I always had a soft spot for the Ruts and used to know Malcolm (well everyone who went to the Nashville did) and after the sad loss "Ruts DC" kept going and turned out some decent stuff.

Still struggling for time, so I'll leave it you you to check them out, and leave a comment to say what you think (and as usual leave a thanks to Phillipe for sharing this gem).

Philippe ripped these at 320, so it comes in two parts. Enjoy.

Band: Ruts DC
Year: 1981
Album: Live At Edinburgh Nite Club
Tracks:
1. Different View
2. Demolition Dancing
3. Dangerous Minds
4. It Was Cold
5. Love In Vain
6. Mirror Smashed
7. Formula Eyes
8. Despondency
9. Fools
10. West One (Clipped End)
11. Parasites (Clipped Begin)
12. Staring At The Rude Boys (Clipped End - a lot)
13. No Time To Kill (Clipped Begin)
14. S.U.S
15 Jah War
16. Different Now
17. Society

Ripped from Philippe's glorious hissing tape

If you like Ruts DC, I'm afraid their debut album is no longer commercially available but you can find a copy at the always excellent Mondo De Muebles here, and you can get some more odds and sods over at the always great Nuzz Prowling Wolf here.

and while your checking them out, why don't you treat yourself to some classic "Ruts" for only£3.99 here:

Ultravox - Paradise Theatre, Boston: March 2nd 1979

Number two (of 5) and this one is from an FM radio show (London Wavelength Concert Hour), not sure why it's called London as its a US show (anyone know more?) and is therefore very good quality. So you're gonna like this one.

I think, I've said it all about Ultravox and John Foxx (I have some good Foxx live gigs coming soon to), so just get that link and listen to their brilliance.

I won't even ask for you to leave a comment, but it would be nice if you did.

Ultravox - Paradise Theatre, Boston: March 3rd 1979

Number three of five, and the second night at the Paradise Theatre in Boston.

Although this one is not the same quality as the previous radio recording it's well worth having, as it contains the first airing and recording of the song "Radio Beach" (which I don't think is available on any studio recording - anyone?). This version is a little ramshackle but if you do like it, there's a better version coming in the next post.

So leave a comment and tell ASFM what you think of Radio Beach, and the rest of this gig.

Number four and the penultimate post from the Ultravox US 1979 tour. A good quality recording and therefore you get to hear "Radio Beach" again but this time a much better recording. You can again get the Flac rips over at Dime.

Ultravox - Detroit Michigan. March 8, 1979 + KROQ Interview 16/03/79

The fifth and final Ultravox live gig from their final 1979 (US) tour. This one also includes a radio interview with the band. Kindly donated again by John Headland, so you can also find a FLAC rip over at Dime.

Not one of the best recordings but it's definitely listenable. The interview starts very quiet (even the DJ says so), so stick with it.

The set list is now a familiar one, but if you love Ultravox, you're want it.

So that's me cleaned out for Ultravox stuff, although there is some John Foxx bootlegs to come.

Gang Of Four - Mothers - Chicago - 09-09-1979 Repost

Well I've said it before, this is what I love about the internet. You can post what you think is right, but you can be sure if it isn't, someone will tell you. The strange thing is that I mentioned at the beginning of the first post that this gig was at Mothers in Chicago, and then got confused with discussion over at Pamplemoose, and the rips were all titled NYC. I should of worked it out, but oh well thanks to Scott we now have confirmation and evidence.

Scott (from Chicago) left the following comment:

FYI, the Gang of Four show on 9/9/79 was at Mother’s in Chicago.

"I was at that show and still have the ticket stub. Gang of Four was the opening act with The Buzzcocks headlining that evening. The ticket was $7.00. Everyone expected a great show from The Buzzcocks, and they delivered just that, but the general consensus was that the Gang of Four were even better."

and to prove it, he even sent a scan of the original ticket (I thought I was a hoarder). Now I can't be arsed to re-up the songs with the correct album title, so I'll leave it to you to correct. If I get some time I will redo the cover. So big thanks to Scott for the correction.

As usual I'll leave the original post below:

ORIGINAL POST

Mother’s still exists and has been located at 26 W. Division St in Chicago since around 1968.
If you haven't already got this one, you're in for a real treat. All of the early Gang Of Four classics are here (well all my favourites are) and in pretty good quality for such an old recording.

If you've seen this live bootleg around, you may have seen the attached notes which states that the venue location is disputed, and suggests it could either be the Bottom Line or Mothers, and you will find both said bootlegs with identical tracks. I checked over at Pamplemoose and you can see Dave Allen's reply to this dispute here (scroll down to the bottom of the comments).

So the dispute is resolved, its Mothers NYC on the 09/09/79.

I've had this on my play list for the last three weeks, and no signs of removing it yet, for me these songs are timeless and still sound as fresh today as they did in 78-79. So what are you waiting for go and get them. If you have any trouble with any of the tracks you can find them individually posted along with some excellent new Gang of Four recordings over at Pamplemoose here (you may have to do a few searches to find them all).

The cover is another one of my homemade attempts. Does anyone recognise the cover? Theres a "no prize" (well a little Kudos for knowing your Gang of Four) for anyone who leaves a comment to say which cover it was taken from.

1. I Found That Essence Rare
2. 5:45
3. Anthrax
4. Contract
5. Natural's Not in It
6. Not Great Men
7. At Home He Feels Like a Tourist
8. Guns Before Butter
9. Return the Gift
10. Armalite Rifle
11. Roseanne (Mekons Cover)
12. Damaged Goods

Leyton Buzzards - Radio 1 In Concert 1979

I was sorting through more boxes of old tapes and was well pleased when I uncovered this little gem. An old friend gave me this many years ago and I had forgotten all about it. I did a quick search and it doesn't appear to be posted anywhere else.

So here's one for you to enjoy. You're hear from the intro that this came of the back of their winning a high profile (BBC1 and the Sun) "Battle of the Bands" contest. Following this they were signed up by "Chrysalis Records".

This concert has them supporting Bethnal (only got the Buzzards here, and personally for me, its the part to have).

It's includes most their best songs, and their first two singles "19 & Mad" and "Saturday Night Beneath the Plastic Palm Trees". So if you never got to see the Leyton Buzzards you can now here what they were like.

Enjoy.

Band: The Leyton Buzzards

Sham 69 / The Members Radio 1 In Concert

This ones for Gobshyte (and Viacomclosemedown on youtube) over at the excellent Mondo De Muebles and also any of you Sham 69 purists/completists out there.

I know your all thinking, I've got this Sham 69 rip but this one is a personal rip which includes the last two songs of the Members gig and then the Kid Jensen intro and a little bit of extra banter from Jimmy Pursey at the beginning and also some extra cheering and Kid Jensen outro at the end (I did say it was for the completists).

The rip is not as good as the one that Gobshyte posted, so I'm sure someone may take the missing bits and add them to the better rip, and then hey we have the best of both worlds.

Anyway here it is, exactly as it was first played on the radio.

Band: Sham 69 & The Members
Album: Live at Radio 1 In Concert
Tracks:
The Members
